Country smothered by air pollution from subcontinent

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) on Thursday said that the air quality in the country had deteriorated due to polluted air from neighboring countries entering Sri Lanka.Director of the Environmental Division of the NBRO Sarath Premasiri said a smog had prevailed in several parts of the country during the last three days.

“Air pollution from other countries is entering Sri Lanka’s airspace, mainly from India. However, we expect this situation to improve in the next few days,” Premasiri said.

He said Sri Lanka will continue to experience this from time to time until March 2023.Premasiri also warned people with respiratory diseases to be careful and for people to wear masks.The air quality index (AQI) in certain parts of the country was over 150, which is very unhealthy for humans.
