Funeral of family members killed in bus-van collision takes place

The funeral of five members of the same family who died in the Nanu Oya-Radella bus-van collision recently was held with the participation of a large number of mourners, on Saturday at the Dik Oya Jumma Mosque Cemetery.

The victims were Abdul Rahim (54 – father), A. Aysha (42 – mother), Mohamed Zaim (14 – son), A. Mariyam (11 – daughter) and A. Habeena (07 – daughter).The funerals of the driver of the van and the driver of the three-wheeler, who are residents of Nanu Oya, are scheduled to be performed today (23).

Nuwara Eliya Hospital Director Dr. Mahendra Senanayake said that four persons injured in the accident were still receiving treatment in hospital. Six others had been transferred to the National Hospital, Colombo, he said.

Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Nandana Galaboda said that heavy vehicles would continue to be banned at the Nanu Oya-Radella Crossroad.Central Province Governor Lalith U Gamage, on Sunday inspected the accident site.

The driver of the bus involved in the accident was arrested by the Nanu Oya Police and was produced before District Judge Nalaka Sanjeewa Edirisinghe yesterday, police said.

The driver (62) was remanded till 01 Feb. He was arrested on Saturday evening while receiving treatment at the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital.Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fatal accident was due to the bus driver’s recklessness.
