Under 19 Division II Tier ‘A’ Cricket Final
After having already secured their deserving places in the Division I tournament, St. Sebastian’s, Katuneriya and Holy Cross, Kalutara will battle it out to decide the champions of the Under 19 Division II Tier ‘A’ tournament in the final starting at Mount Lavinia today.
Having qualified to play in Division one the next season the teams would find it a mere formality to complete the final but a victory will give the much-needed boost to face tough challenges ahead.
Holy Cross captained by Sasindu Kaushan have already savoured a title triumph this season. They won the limited-overs tournament of the same Division and Tier before cruising to the final of this format.
Incidentally, these two teams were in the same group during the first round and Holy Cross lost first innings points before making a comeback in the second innings when these two teams encountered each other during that phase. They ended up in third place behind St. Sebastian’s and Sri Devananda in the points table at the end of the five-match first round. But from then on there was no turning back.
They beat Vidyartha College, Kandy in the quarter-final before a remarkable marathon batting effort helped them eliminate Sri Devananda in the semi-final.
St. Sebastian’s skippered by Chathumal Nimesh received a walkover in the quarter-final from St. John’s, Jaffna. What was remarkable in their journey toward the final was their thrilling last-ball triumph over Sri Sumangala College, Panadura in the semi-final.
