Sujatha Mohan Biography

Sujatha Mohan is an Indian playback singer. She has sung in Malayalam and Tamil languages.
Mohan is the granddaughter of paravur T. K. Narayana Pillai, the first Chief Minister of the erstwhile Cochin State after Independence. Her first song was Kalai Paniyil from the Tamil Film Gayathri (1977), starring Sridevi Rajinikanth, and music composed by Ilayaraja. Her first Tamil hit film song was Puthu Vellai Mazhai from Mani Ratnam’s 1992 film Roja, composed by A. R. Rahman. She has had other hit songs from films including Gentleman (1993), Indian (1996) and Minsaara Kanavu (1997).

She has sang in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Baduga languages. Her Hindi songs in films like ‘Pukaar’ and ‘Taal’ have topped the charts. She has sang more than 5000 songs.

About not getting the National award she said to a daily, “I have missed it narrowly in some years. Moreover, some films with good songs are not entered for the National Awards every year. This is part of the game. If I am destined, I will get it one day.”

She sang her first film’s song when she was still in the sixth standard. Her first actual film is TOURIST BUNGALOW – Malayalam that released in 1974. Her first Tamil film song (‘Kaadhal Oviyam Kandein’) was not included in the film. However she took it as a good sign.

Her first released song Kalai Paniyil Addum Malargal was from Gayathri. She married Dr. Mohan in 1981 and moved to Chennai, which helped her to launch her career again. She made a comeback in 1989 through Priyadarshan’s `Kadathanadan Ambadi.’ Her songs in `Chitram’ (1988) made her even more famous. In the Tamil films, she made a comeback through `Puthuvellai Mazhai’ in A.R. Rahman’s debut film `Roja’ in 1992.
