Mudalige gears for fresh showdown

By Pradeep Prasanna Tennakoon

A series of countrywide protests will commence soon if the government does not address the issues faced by university students, says Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) convener, Wasantha Mudalige.

The government had deliberately undermined the university system and the issues faced by university students have intensified in recent times, he told The Island yesterday.

“We have informed the Ministry of Education and the government of the issues in the university system. However, nothing has been done about it,” Mudalige said.

Students had not been paid the Mahapola scholarship money for several months, Mudalige said.

“Most university students do not have hostel facilities. They can’t even afford subsidised meals at university canteens,” he said.
