The UK on Friday thanked India for providing “vital supplies of paracetamol” during the coronavirus pandemic. This was said by the UK delegation participating in the India Global Week, a three-day event that will see deliberations ranging from geopolitics to business, arts and culture to emerging technologies, besides banking, finance, pharmaceuticals, defence and security.

Organised by India Inc, a UK based media group, the theme of the event this year is, ‘Be the Revival: India and the Better New World’.

The event began on July 9 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi giving a short virtual address where he spoke about the openness showed by the Indian economy towards global investors.

Leading the UK delegation, UK’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab laid emphasis on strengthening the “strong bond” between India and the UK. “Britain and India will be energetic champions of free trade, to boost small businesses, to cut the cost of living for consumers and to create the jobs of the future,” he said.

Matt Hancock, UK’s health Secretary, described India as a “tech powerhouse” and hailed the contribution of Indian medical professionals to the state-funded National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.

He said latest government figures in the UK show that people of Indian-origin comprise the second-highest workforce in the NHS.

“Prime Minister Modi has called India the world’s pharmacy. It is true. Around 40 per cent of UK medicines have some parts of their manufacturing done in India,” he said.

Lord Tariq Ahmad, Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth, and John Murton, the UK Government’s COP-26 envoy, were among other speakers at the annual conference.

The three-day event is expected to be attended by nearly 5,000 participants from 30 nations and is scheduled to host 75 sessions with over 250 speakers. The entire event is being held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic.
