I have been trying to find the exact meaning of “yearning” to illustrate my point concerning what Plato said 2400 years ago about Voters and Politicians. There are 127 synonyms but none come even close to describe what Plato described. The only way I can describe yearning is someone bought a lottery ticket, the jackpot for that particular week was rollover £130million and he yearns if he wins. Based on his yearning he plans what to do with the windfall. It is a multi-million to one chance but there is a chance.
This sort of desire is every human beings trait. It is buried deeply in the mind that does not surface very often but it can be awaken by rekindling. Plato did not say lottery win but he said Tripartite Soul in book IV, dividing human desire into three distinct buried drivers: Logistico, Thymoeides and Epithymeticon. That is truth, wisdom and understanding; honour, recognition, victory and self respect; Physical pleasures, comfort, material goods and wealth.
As you can see the Politician can awaken those buried desires with the right language to instil hope to get the votes. At this stage the voters are unlikely to realise the generous politician is a liar or tyrant.
In our case in America the Politician is both a liar and a tyrant. Trump is not only the two described but much more than that; a shameless thief, a gangster, a deceit and whatever the despicable quality of a human being ever will have. He is all that.
