Politicians’ property damage claims to be re-evaluated

Investigators have taken steps to reevaluate the claims made by politicians about damages caused to their properties on 09 May following the attack on anti-government protesters at Galle Face.The Presidential Secretariat has asked them to reevaluate damages, given that some politicians have made exorbitant claims.

Sources said that during recent weeks the media have exposed that some of these estimates were hard to believe.On Wednesday, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) asked Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to name the Minister who had asked for over one billion rupees as compensation for property loss.

TNA Batticaloa MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, participating in a Parliament debate on malnutrition of children and mothers, said that the House had a right to know who had submitted a claim for Rs 1,000 million as compensation for property loss during unrest in May
