More than 110 houses had suffered damage in four districts due to inclement weather which wreaked havoc in most parts of the country, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.
The DMC was working round-the-clock in all districts to assist those affected, it said.
DMC said that more than 1,675 people belonging to 387 families were affected by the inclement weather that hit countrywide.
Of the 110 houses, one house was completely destroyed, while 109 houses were partially damaged, said DMC Assistant Director, Pradeep Kodippili.
He said that two deaths were reported at Dunuwila and seven people were injured. They were residents of Badulla, Harispattuwa and Akurana.,
The districts of Kandy, Matale, Ampara and Badulla were severely affected by this situation and 1,675 people belonging to 387 families in those districts were affected due to house damage and floods, he added
The Kandy district has been affected the most, and 1,367 people belonging to 322 families in that district have been affected.
The two fatalities were reported following an earth slip in Akurana, Kandy due to the heavy rains.
They died after a rock fell on a house in Dunuwila, Akurana.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department yesterday said that the depression over the island has weakened into a low-pressure area and likely to move to the western coast of Sri Lanka.
According to the duty forecaster said its impact on the island’s weather will lessen from yesterday evening.
Accordingly, showers or thunder showers will occur at times over Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Northern provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy showers above 75mm can be expected at some places in the above areas, the Department said.
Strong gusty winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the country.
