78.5 per cent jump in worker remittances last month

Sri Lankan migrant workers remitted 568.3 million U.S. dollars in March 2023, Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said.This is a 78.5 percent increase compared to the inflows recorded in March 2022, he told the media while announcing the monthly remittances.

Sri Lanka only received 318.4 million dollars in March 2022, he said.Nanayakkara said remittances by foreign workers have increased greatly this year.

The country received 437.5 million dollars in the first month of 2023 and 407.4 million in February of this year alone.In 2021, Sri Lankan workers sent 5.49 billion dollars, and remitted only around 3.8 billion dollars in 2022, the Central Bank data revealed.Workers’ remittance is one of main sources of foreign revenue earnings for the country.
