President updated on challenges faced by the gem and jewellery industry

President Ranil Wickremesinghe during a discussion held on Friday (15) afternoon at the Presidential Secretariat’s with stakeholders from the gems and jewellery industry, said that concessions would be provided to those engaged in the gems and jewellery sector.

Extensive discussions were held regarding the challenges arising from the government’s new tax policies, which have had repercussions on the gem and jewellery industry, along with other pertinent issues concerning the sector.

The President said that immediate changes to the tax policy was not feasible and added that efforts will be made to devise an effective system to enhance the gem and jewellery industry. He directed officials to collaborate with both the public and private sectors and draft a proposal addressing these issues within two weeks.
