Police entering universities: Susil calls for investigation

By Saman Indrajith

Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha, on Thursday, told Parliament that he had asked the Ministers of Internal Affairs, and Law and Order as well as the Police Department to take action if the police entered university without obtaining permission.

The Minister said so in response to a question raised by MP Buddhika Pathirana about the recent police crackdowns on protests by undergraduates.

“There are problems in universities and unions have made representation to me. I have tried to address them. Recent student protests were not due to problems affecting universities; they had to do with common issues. However, the police need to follow procedure if they are to enter universities. I have asked the relevant officials and ministers to look into those incidents,” the Education Minister said.
