Oshini wins Asian Youth Under 10 chess title

Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana of Wycherley International School won the Asian Youth Under 10 girls’ chess title at the Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022 in Bali, Indonesia. She scored 8.5 points during the nine-round event where Iran’s Bahar Mirzakhani was the only opponent who was able to hold her for a draw. That came in the eighth round.

Oshini commenced the tournament as the third ranked player but dominated from the start.

She secured the championship before the final round where she led the ranking table with 1.5 points in the eighth round. She also achieved the Woman Candidate Master title. Oshini is the reigning World Under 10 champion after winning the World Youth Online Chess Championship 2021. Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022 is underway in Bali, Indonesia. The event which commenced on October 15 was scheduled to culminate yesterday.

Asian Youth Chess Championship 2022 was organised by the Indonesian Chess Federation on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation. 451 Players from twenty Asian countries competed in the event in 12 categories. The former Ferguson High School player is trained by Akila Kavinda. She has been under his guidance since 2020.
