St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa’s Junior Tennis ‘Red’ Team clinched the Under 10 All Island Consolation Championship 2022, at the recently held Inter School Cool Tennis Tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association.

As a distinguished school, recognised for its rich history of sporting achievements, St. Michael’s two junior teams – Red and Blue Teams participated in the Under 10 tourney.

The Red team showed immense promise, winning seven of the eight matches. In the Group matches they secured wins against St. Peter’s College Negombo, Dr. Kulasinghe College Ja-Ela, St. Antony’s College Wattala and Zahira College. The Team triumphed in the round of sixteen winning against Richmond Galle. However, they experienced a setback losing to Maliyadeva College Kurunagala in the quarter-final.

The Red team was selected into the Consolation Round and proceeded from the semi-finals when they beat the Ananda College B Team. In the finals they beat St. Joseph’s College, Maradana to become Group Champions.

The Red Team comprised of G. Krishaangan, A. Atheeithan, Y. Thonishiyas, Daniel Aaron Lovell, P. Luxhimidhar, H. Nathuninth and A, Darkish.

The team’s success was due to the hard work of the children and the dedication of the Sports Teacher-in-Charge, M. Puvanatharshan, School Head Coach, V. Thineshkumar (Regional Coordinator) and the School Tennis Coach E. Lukshan, in addition to the School Principal, Pius Anandarajah, who provided overall guidance.

A total of 1,300 schoolchildren across 121 teams from across the island participated in the tournament.
