Damro Group joined Sri Lanka Athletics to felicitate the athletes who won medals at last month’s Asian Athletics Championship at a ceremony held on Monday.
The medal winning athletes were rewarded with handsome cash awards at the ceremony. While athletes who won individual gold medals in Thailand received rupees 500,000.00 each, the winners of bronze medals were given away rupees 250,000.00.
The men’s relay team which won the gold medal with a new championship record received rupees 1.5 million.
Sri Lanka Athletics also received the patronage of Damro Group to support nutritional needs of the athletes who are selected to compete at the forthcoming Asian Games.
The magnanimous gesture of the private firm has come at a crucial juncture when the track and field governing body makes an effort to build on the historic achievement of its team at the Asian Championships.
Sri Lanka created history at last month’s Asian Athletics Championships when the track and field team won eight medals including three gold medals. Sri Lanka also established two meet records. Ratnayake Central, Walala prodigy Tharushi Karunaratne broke the women’s 800 metres meet record to win gold, while the men’s 4×400 metres team inclusive of Kalinga Kumarage, Aruna Dharshana, Pabasara Niku and Rajitha Rajakaruna clinched gold with a new mark.
