Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has alleged that consumers are being fleeced by those who have the backing of politically-influential officials.
In a statement issued yesterday (02), the former Speaker said that the sugar scam was a glaring example of how interested parties abused the system.
Jayasuriya alleged that though the prices of sugar, wheat and dhal had come down in the international market, the consumers here continued to be charged exorbitant prices.
