Navy fishes out three bags containing 128 kilos of Kerala cannabis

By Norman Palihawadane

The Navy has recovered a stock of over 128 kilos (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis during a patrol carried out off the Karainagar Island in Jaffna on Sunday (19).

SLNS Edithara II attached to the Northern Naval Command fished out three traveling bags found adrift at sea, during the patrol. The suspicious travelling bags contained 42 parcels stuffed with Kerala cannabis weighing over 128 kilos (wet weight).

It is believed that the smugglers might have left behind the consignment being unable to fetch them ashore, as a result of constant naval search operations in the area.

The gross street value of the stock of Kerala cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 42 million.

The stock of Kerala cannabis has been kept in naval custody until legal proceedings.
