CPA files FR violation petition asking SC to order probe against officials who hindered holding of polls

By A.J.A Abeynayake

The Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) has filed a Fundamental Rights petition urging the Supreme Court to order an investigation on the Government Printer, Treasury Secretary, and the IGP, for deliberately hindering the local government election, scheduled for 09 March.

The CPA has, in its petition, said local council elections must be held once in four years, as per the election laws.

A number of state officials are expected to assist the Elections Commission in holding the election. The CPA has said that by not doing this, the respondents have violated the fundamental rights of Sri Lankans.

The petitioners have said their rights guaranteed by Articles 10, 12(1) and 14(1)(a) of the Constitution have been violated and/or continue to be violated by attempts to sabotage and stall the holding of the local government polls.

The petitioners have said that the Elections Commission has declared elections and had taken steps to hold local council elections. However, the mentioned officials have caused the election to be postponed by not providing the necessary funding, materials and security.
