successful cultivation, power generation hinge on expected rains this month

BY Nimal Gunathilake

The major and medium scale irrigation tanks were about 65 percent full, Director of Irrigation – Hydrology S.P.C. Sugeeshwara told The Island on Friday.

The water level at the Laxapana reservoir had reached 42 percent of its capacity while the average water levels of the Mahaweli tanks were 50 percent, he said.

The Irrigation Department was doing all it could to avoid shortages for irrigation and electricity generation, Sugeeshwara said.

According to the Director Irrigation – Hydrology, the Department operates 73 large scale and 107 medium scale tanks. There is enough water for the Yala season and the Department was expecting showers in March, he said.

“However, if there are no rains in March, there might be difficulties,” he said.
