Will new dispensation revisit MCC agreement with USA?

State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe told Parliament yesterday that no decision had been taken to seek a grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

State Minister Semasinghe said that the government under Gotabaya Rajapaksa had decided against going ahead with the agreement with the US.

However, he added that a new government has the right to decide on the matter.

The Minister said that so far the current administration had not discussed the MCC grant.

He said so when SJB Badulla District MP Chaminda Wijesiri asked whether the government was planning to sign the MCC agreement.

MP Wijesiri alleged that there were plans to hand over state assets to China, or India on the pretext of debt restructuring.

The Minister said there were no links between the debt restructuring process with China and the MCC agreement.
