Security forces personnel addicted to drugs must be rehabilitated urgently, Ven. Kuppiyawatte Bodananda Thera ha said.The government can obtain the assistance of civil society organisations to rehabilitate such military personnel, the thera has said.
“The government must take steps to eradicate the menace of drugs. Unfortunately, a large number of security forces personnel are addicted to drugs and this makes matters very complicated. The government must not terminate their services. Just because they are fired from the military wouldn’t mean that they would quit drugs.
“Instead of taking disciplinary action these officers must be sent to rehab for about four months. The government has facilities to rehabilitate people. There are other organisations who can pool in their resources. Terminating the services of security force personnel who have become addicted to drugs, without rehabilitating them will disastrous consequences.”
