ACJU requests more slots for Islam course at NCOE

From M.A. Kaleel,our Kalmunai Corr

The Muslim scholars’ body All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulema has appealed to the Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajyantha to increase the number of students enrolled for Islam course at National College of Education, Addalaichenai, this year.

In the letter addressed to the Minister, ACJU says that they are deeply concerned that the number of students enrolled for the Islam course has been reduced to mere 20 for two batches of students this year. It says that the particular College previously admitted 30 students per batch.

They have requested the Minister to increase the number as there is a shortage of Islam teachers in schools. They have maintained that around 20 percent of students fail the subject due to the shortage of teachers to teach Islam.

According to the Gazette notification on admission to the NCOE, the number of students admitted to courses on other religions remain the same as in the previous year while the number of students enrolled to the Islam course has been drastically reduced.
