Police attack on NPP protest: HRC orders IGP to submit report

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) yesterday called on IGP Chandana Wickremaratne to submit a report, within 24 hours, on the police dispersing of the JVP-led NPP protest, in Colombo, on Sunday, where 28 people were injured.

The HRCSL has said a Court order had not been issued preventing such protests in the area where the police attack took place.

The HRCSL has said its attention has been directed towards the incident where around 28 persons were injured when police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse a protest march held by the National People’s Power (NPP) on Sunday (26), in the vicinity of Union Place, in Colombo.

The Commission has initiated an immediate investigation into the incident and ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to submit a full report, on Sunday’s incident, within 24 hours.

The HRCSL has said that further investigations will be carried out, based on the report.
