MPs’ brawl: Police seek Speaker’s opinion

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thladuwa yesterday said that further police investigations into an incident where some MPs allegedly resorted to fisticuffs near the parliamentary chamber would be conducted after obtaining a statement from the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on the MPs’ complaints.

SSP Thalduwa said that the Welikada Police had received a complaint from MP Diana Gamage that she was assaulted in the parliamentary premises, and the Mirihana police had received two complaints from MPs Sujith Perera and Rohana Bandara that they were attacked by MP Gamage.

SSP Thalduwa said that the police would meet the Speaker and seek his advice shortly.

A video footage of the MPs resorting to violence went viral on social media platforms on Friday (20). Later in the evening, MP Gamage admitted herself to the Jayewardenepura hospital and she was discharged on Saturday.Mirihana and Welikada police are conducting further investigations.
